I’ve always thought to myself that the screens on my desk looked all wrong but I figured it was that I use a retina iPad and retina MacBook so I was used to high-resolution.
I used my third-party font manager to clear all the font caches on my Mac, but I saw no improvement. I checked the Read and Write permissions on every Fonts folder I could find, and they were correct. Font Book does in fact have a view that displays all glyphs provided by a font — just select Preview - Repertoire on the menu bar: You can also get a preview of a font using Quick Look: select a font file (from /Library/Fonts) and press space.

But somewhere in my upgrades, the LCD Font Smoothing has been enabled – this makes the fonts on the screen look blurry /fuzzy due to sub-pixel rendering which is not necessary on Apple screens or retina displays.

Got o System Preferences, General and uncheck “Use LCD Font Smoothing”
Your eyes will thank you.
Why ? The last time I installed Mac OS X from scratch was in 2008. I’ve just been running the upgrades since then so I’m guessing this is a holdover from a previous system. I’m thankful that I just found out about it.
